Augustana Athletics is looking for spirited and enthusiastic individuals to serve as Ole for the 2025-26 academic year. Ole The Viking has represented Augustana University in various forms since 1939.
Mascots are considered members of the Augustana Spirit Squad program and are scheduled for events and coordinated by the Augustana Athletics Marketing Department.
Physical Requirements
Performing in a mascot costume is very physically demanding, you must be in good physical condition.
Height: Costume will accommodate 5’9” - 6’3”
Time Commitment
Team practice times to work on moves, skits, dances, etc., are held regularly with the Augustana Spirit Squad and other members of the mascot group.
Ole appears at:
- Augustana football, hockey, and basketball games
- Select other athletic and University events
- Special appearances
Most events occur:
- In the evenings and consistently on weekends (Thursday through Sunday)
- Ole may be required to appear at games during holiday breaks
Time off:
- Requests must be made before the event
- Once scheduled, individuals are responsible for trading shifts if needed
Ideal mascot team size: 2-3 individuals to ensure flexibility and adequate time off

Scholarship
Payment is made in the form of a scholarship that goes toward the cost of tuition at Augustana. The scholarship amount increases each semester that you serve as Ole, recognizing your continued commitment and experience in the role.
Being Ole
Becoming a mascot does not happen overnight. It takes practice, both in and out of costume, to master walking, crouching, exaggerated motions, body language, showing emotions, etc.
Those interested should be:
- Enthusiastic and outgoing
- Able to work well with others, including children and fans of all ages
- Skilled in crowd interaction
- Well-animated without the use of words
- Creative with fan photo opportunities
- Passionate about Augustana University and Augustana Athletic programs
- A positive reflection of the University
- In good physical condition to wear heavy costumes and stand/walk for extended periods of time
