NSIC / U.S. Bank All-Sports Award Release - PDF
Augustana College finished in second place in the 2008-09 NSIC / U.S. Bank All-Sports Award competition, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference office announced today.
Augustana scored 47 points during the spring sports season, which consisted of baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's outdoor track and field and women's tennis. The Vikings, who were in second place following the fall and winter seasons, finished with 130.5 points. Minnesota State University, Mankato, won the All-Sports Award with 168 points.
In the spring sports season, the Vikings were bolstered by a runner-up finish by the softball team, a fourth-place finish by the women's tennis team, fifth-place finishes in both men's and women's golf and a sixth-place finish in baseball.
For the year, Augustana won just 1 NSIC title, that coming in women's cross country, but the Vikings were consistent in their finishes. In all, Augustana had 12 top-5 finishes, including 5 top-3 finishes.
That consistency translated to one of the most successful years in school history. Six teams qualified for NCAA Championship tournaments, 8 individuals qualified for their respective NCAA Championships and the football team won the Mineral Water Bowl.
Points for the All-Sports Award were awarded by giving the winner of each title in a conference-sponsored championship points totaling the number of teams sponsoring that sport plus one. The next place finisher receives points totaling the number of teams less the number of places from first place. Ties at any level shall result in the totaling of points and distributed equally. The points for NSIC indoor and outdoor track and field are divided by two.
The NSIC / U.S. Bank All-Sports Award will be presented at the NSIC Hall of Fame Banquet in July in St. Cloud, Minn.
