The Augustana baseball team lost both games of a double-header against Colorado School of Mines Saturday in Golden, Colo. Augie dropped the first 11-6 before losing a heartbreaker in the seventh inning, 11-10.
The losses drop Augustana to 1-3 overall this season. CSM improves to 3-1.
Game two was a shootout, and the Vikings got things going early, scoring one run in the top of the first before exploding for five runs in the top of the second. Freshman
Nate Hewes doubled to left center and then scored on a single by sophomore
Chris Ward. Junior
Nate Baumann singled and then advanced to second on an error by the right fielder, allowing Ward to score. A single by junior
Drew Heithoff scored Baumann and a homerun by junior
Deryk Marks gave Augie a 6-0 lead.
Freshman right-hander
Grant Larson hit the first batter in the bottom of the second and a homer by Elliott Riege scored two runs for the Orediggers. They scored one more run in the inning to make the score 6-3.
Augie gave up the lead in the bottom of the third, allowing the Orediggers to score five runs. Anthony Siderius started the inning off with a double, and Riege reached on a throwing error by Dubanoski. A homerun by Nick Piehl tied the score at 6-6. But the Orediggers weren't done, and when back-to-back singles put two runners on, both of which eventually scored on a double by Craig Matsuda. This made the score 8-6, CSM.
The Vikings retook the lead, putting together two scoring innings. Baumann scored the only run by either team in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, junior
Gates Cook was hit by a pitch and freshman
Chris Glynn subbed in to pinch run. A single by Hewes advances Glynn to second and both runners scored on a double by Baumann, giving Augie the 9-8 lead.
Two errors by the Vikings in the bottom of the fifth allowed the Orediggers to re-tie the game at 9-9.
Marks started out the sixth inning with a single through the left side, and advanced to second on a
Charlie Dubanoski walk. Marks advanced to third on a bunt by senior
Dan Morrison, and stole home on a
Brian Knight groundout.
A series of wild pitches allowed the Orediggers to tie the score at 10-10 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Augie batters were out 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh and the Vikings brought in junior closer
Bret Severtson to pitch. The Orediggers led off with a double by Bobby Egeberg and a a single by Nick Wong advanced him to third. A sacrifice fly scored Siderius and gave the Orediggers the win.
Baumann went 3 for 5 and scored two runs while recording two RBIs. Marks was 2 for 4 with two RBI and recorded his first home run of the season.
Severtson suffered the loss for the Vikings and Larson allowed seven earned runs on six hits in three innings pitched.
The Vikings dropped the first game thanks to a big fourth inning by the Orediggers.
Augie led after the first inning, when Baumann hit a leadoff double before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Another double by Marks scored Baumann, and a Dubanoski single gave the Vikings the 2-0 lead.
Neither team would score until the bottom of the second, when Siderius and Riege hit back-to-back homers.
Another CSM longball scored two runs in the third, making the score 4-2. Augie manufactured another run in the top of the fourth, when a double by Knight scored Dubanoski after he was walked.
The Orediggers stopped the Viking comeback there, scoring four runs in the fourth inning. The Vikings had one out before a throwing error by Hewes allowed Riege to reach first. Junior pitcher
Tyler Pierson loaded the bases, walking Matt Pullos and hitting Tyler Thornton before a two-out double by Matsuda scored all three. Egeberg doubled immediately after, scoring Matsuda and making the score 8-3.
Both teams scored one run in the fifth, and the Orediggers increased their lead in the bottom of the sixth, when a triple by Matsuda scored John Wilson before he scored on a single by Wong.
Augie tried to make up the deficit in the top of the seventh. Morrison led off and was hit by a pitch, then was driven in on Dubanoski's first home run of the season. Augie was not able to generate any more offense and lost 11-6.
Dubanoski led the Viking offense, going 3 for 3 and scoring twice. He collected four RBI's and blasted his first home run of the season.
Augie will look for revenge against the Orediggers tomorrow as they play a double-header beginning at noon mountain time.
Pierson took the loss for Augie, allowing four earned runs on six hits in four innings pitched.
