The Augustana wrestling team had a league-best six individuals named to the 2009-10 All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Teams, as voted by the league's head coaches. Additionally, freshman
Nate Herda was named the Rookie of the Year and head coach
Jason Reitmeier was named the Coach of the Year.
Herda, a 149-pounder, was one of four Vikings named to the All-NSIC First Team. Joining him were
Laramie Shaffer (133 pounds),
Marcus Edgington (157 pounds) and
Ty Copsey (197 pounds). Earning spots on the second team were
Jay Sherer (141 pounds) and
Gavin Nelson (165 pounds).
According to NSIC guidelines, the highest place-winner at the NCAA Regional Tournament from each weight class is named to the all-conference first team. The runner-up, and other individuals who go on to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Division II National Championships, are named to the second team.
Herda, Shaffer, Edgington and Copsey all won their weight classes at the Super Region 3 Tournament, while Sherer was a regional runner-up. Nelson was third at regionals but earned All-America honors at the national meet.
After winning the regional title, Herda proceeded to go 3-2 at the NCAA Division II National Championships on his way to earning All-American status and a fourth place finish. He finished the season with 28-9 record, including five pins and a perfect 7-0 record in NSIC dual action.
Shaffer, the team's only senior, went 15-6 after transferring to Augustana from Iowa State for the second half of the season. After winning the regional title, Shaffer finished fifth at nationals with a 3-2 record.
A sophomore, Edgington spent several weeks as the top-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds. He posted a team-high 32 wins en route to a 32-6 overall record with four pins. He went 4-2 at nationals and earned All-America honors for the first time in his career with a fourth-place finish.
Copsey, the 2008 North Central Conference Freshman of the Year, had a 21-4 record this season as he won his second regional title and advanced to nationals for the third time in his career. Copsey, a junior, went 3-1 at the national meet as he finished second, becoming a three-time All-American after finishing seventh in 2009 and fourth in 2008.
Sherer, a junior, accumulated a 29-9 record this season. After losing in the finals of the regional meet on a defensive pin, Sherer rebounded by capturing the 141-pound national title. Sherer is now a two-time All-American after finishing seventh in 2009.
Nelson advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career in 2010. He went 2-3 at nationals to finish eighth, earning All-America honors.
Reitmeier guided the Vikings to their best season since 2005. After finishing second in the NSIC with a 6-1 dual record, Reitmeier led the Vikings to the regional team title as well as a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Named the Super Region #3 Coach of the Year following the regional championships, coached six All-Americans this season. It is the second time in his seven years at Augustana that Reitmeier has been named a conference coach of the year. He was the North Central Conference Coach of the Year, as well as the regional and national coach of the year, in 2005 after guiding Augustana to the conference and regional titles as well as a national runner-up finish.
