For the second consecutive day, the Augustana baseball team split a doubleheader with St. Cloud State Sunday in St. Cloud, Minn. The Vikings lost the first game 9-8 and won the second 8-6.

The Vikings record now sits at 24-20 and 11-9 in the NSIC. St. Cloud State is now 28-9 and 15-5 in the league.

The first game had three ties and two lead changes as the two teams battled for the advantage. St. Cloud State built a 7-2 sixth inning lead before Augustana exploded for five runs in the seventh. The Vikings took advantage of three walks and one batter hit by pitch to bring five across the plate to tie the game at 7-7.

St. Cloud State answered in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 8-7, but a groundout by Charlie Dubanoski scored Nate Baumann to tie the score 8-8 in the eighth. St. Cloud State again rallied for the lead 9-8, but Augie could not bring another run across.

Sam Gotham took the loss (2-2) for the Vikings, giving up six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work.

In the second game, the Vikings used the big inning to take an early lead. Despite spotting SCSU a 5-0 after one inning, Augie erupted in the top of the second for seven runs. Two SCSU errors and several wild pitches and passed balls opened the door, and Augie took advantage, scoring the seven runs on only three hits.

SCSU added another run in the bottom of the sixth to draw within one, but Drew Heithoff scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to increase the lead back to 8-6. St. Cloud State could not bring another run across in the bottom of the inning, and the Vikings secured their 24th win of the season.

Per Nestingen earned the win (4-1), giving up five earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. Bret Severtson picked up the save, closing the final two innings with only one SCSU hit.

The Vikings continue their road trip, travelling to Upper Iowa on Wednesday. The doubleheader in Fayette, Iowa, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
