Augustana Basketball Hires New Assistant Coach

Assistant men's basketball coach Jayden Olson has resigned to pursue at job at Colorado State University, head basketball coach Tom Billeter announced today. Jeff Trumbauer has been named as the new assistant coach for the Vikings.

Olson spent three seasons with the Vikings, helping the team to a 67-26 record during his time at Augustana. The team also qualified for three NCAA Div. II Regional Tournaments while Olson was a part of the program.

"I first and foremost want to thank Coach Billeter for the opportunity and for three great years,” Olson said. “He is a great coach, but an even better person. He runs a first class program and does things the right way. There is no doubt my experiences at Augustana have allowed me to mature professionally. I would also like to thank the administration, other coaches, and our players. These have been three years I never will forget."

Olson will be heading to Fort Collins, Colo., where he will serve as the Video Coordinator for the men's basketball team at Colorado State University.

"I am looking forward to the opportunity to work for Coach Miles and the rest of the staff at CSU. Coach Miles is a guy I have always looked up to and there is no doubt in my mind I will continue to grow professionally working for him. This is truly a great opportunity for me and I look forward to doing whatever necessary to help CSU basketball."

“I want to thank Jayden Olson for all he did during his three seasons at Augustana,” Billeter said. “He did a terrific job and will do very well at Colorado State. He will always be highly thought of here at Augustana.”

The position of assistant men's basketball coach will be filled by Jeff Trumbauer, who has been the head coach of the Jamestown College men's basketball team in Jamestown, N.D., since 2004.

Trumbauer is no stranger to Coach Billeter or Augustana. He worked with Billeter at NDSU and spent one season as an assistant coach at Augustana, where he helped to bring in talented players such as Nick Olson, Joey Ryan, Ian Thomas, and Marques Blank.

“We knew it would not be easy to replace Jayden,” Billeter said. “However, I do believe we have hired a young man who will pick right up where Jayden left off. Jeff Trumbauer is coming back to Augustana and we are very excited to have him.”

Trumbauer has turned Jamestown into a championship program. In the last four seasons, he has led the Jimmies to the 2nd best win percentage in the Dakota Athletic Conference, going 73-48. He was named DAC Coach of the Year in 2008 and twice his teams have been ranked the No. 1 Defensive Team in the DAC.

A talented recruiter, Trumbauer has developed seven All-Americans and 11 All-Conference players. He coached the 2007 DAC Defensive Player of the Year and the 2008 DAC Most Valuable Player. He also recruited the 2010 DAC Newcomer of the Year.

“His familiarity with me and my system is vital, yet he will bring new ideas and recruiting contacts as well,” Billeter said. “Jeff did a great job at Jamestown and his head coaching experience there will be quite beneficial to the Augustana program. He is also a tireless worker, a great coach and wonderful family man. I was fortunate to replace someone as talented as Jayden with somebody like Jeff.”

Trumbauer earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from North Dakota State University in 1998 and completed a master's degree in Physical Education at Northern State University in 1999.

He will begin his duties at Augustana on June 1.
