LINCOLN, Neb. – Augustana men's tennis won its season-opening match Saturday, defeating Nebraska Wesleyan 8-1.
The Vikings began the match with a bang, capturing three doubles victories.
At No. 1,
Jared Drenkow and
Evan Gardner had an 8-4 win.
Mitchell Barr and
Collin Noldner earned an 8-3 win at No. 2.
At the third doubles spot,
Jackson Buchanan and
Neal Gregerson picked up an 8-1 victory.
Augustana kept the momentum rolling into singles play, winning five of its six matches.
Drenkow beat Nate Hoppe 6-0, 6-1 at the top singles spot, and Gregerson swept Seth Milburn at the sixth spot.
Gardner (No. 3) defeated Ryan McCarty in the first set, but was unable win the second set, dropping the match 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, 10-7.
Augustana had a pair of 6-2, 6-2 victories from Barr and Noldner at No. 2 and No. 4.
Buchanan notched the Vikings' final win at No. 5 (6-1, 6-1).
JD Carrels played an exhibition match for the Vikings, beating Seth Peters 8-1.
Augustana returns to the court Feb. 25 at Coe in Storm Lake, Iowa.
