WAYNE, Neb. - Derek Hansen highlights a group of four from Augustana who picked up regional honors from Rawlings and the American Baseball Coaches Association on Wednesday.
Hansen was named the Central Region Pitcher of the Year and all-region first team at pitcher,
David Borchardt was placed on the all-region second team at outfield and
Casey Jacobson (first team) and
Nate Hewes (second team) landed on the Central Region Gold Glove team.
Hansen, a junior from Fergus Falls, Minn., was the NSIC Pitcher of the Year and an all-conference first-team selection at both pitcher and first base. The right-hander went 7-4 with a 1.60 earned-run average this season, striking out a school-record 103 batters in just 67.2 innings. Opponents were limited to a .181 batting average, and he allowed just one home run all year. He was also named the region pitcher of the year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association earlier this week.
A junior from St. Michael, Minn., Borchardt was named All-NSIC second team earlier this month. He batted .335 with 14 doubles and a team-best 14 homers. Borchardt also drove in 37 runs and stole 11 bases. Additionally, he was an all-region second-team pick by the NCBWA.
Jacobson, a senior pitcher from Apple Valley, Minn., did not commit an error all season. The right-hander, who finished 5-5, pitched a school-record 82.2 innings this season. He was also a selection to the NSIC's Gold Glove team.
Hewes, a second baseman, made just eight errors on 227 chances in 2012 for a .965 fielding percentage. The junior from Stillwater, Minn., also found a spot on the NSIC Gold Glove team.
As the pitcher of the year, Hansen has already secured a spot on one of the Rawlings/ABCA's three All-America teams.
Augustana compiled its third-straight 30-win season in 2012, finishing 32-21. The Vikings tied for fourth in the NSIC with a conference mark of 22-12.
