DAY ONE RESULTS
ABERDEEN, S.D. – Henrik Holmberg sits atop the leaderboard after day one of the men's decathlon at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Multi-Event Championships. Holmberg scored 3,801 points in the five events on day one.
To start the day, Holmberg clocked a 11.14-second 100-meter dash, the second fastest among the 11 competitors, and scored 830 points. To take the lead, Holmberg was the only athlete to surpass seven meters in the long jump. Holmberg's best leap of 7.09 meters (23' 3”) gave him 835 points and a lead over 100 points after two events.
Holmberg's lead was relinquished in the shot put when he scored 597 points with a best toss of 11.85 meters (38' 10.5”). The Vik, Norway Native then hit another event-high mark with his 1.99-meter (6' 6.25”) high jump, good enough for 794 points.
To extend his lead, Holmberg clocked the fastest time in the 400-meter dash. Holmberg's 51.43-second lap earned him 745 points for a first-day total of 3,801 points.
Holmberg's closest competitor is 265 points behind him and the senior is closing in on a provisional-qualifying mark to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships in May. The provisional-qualifying mark is 6,200 points and Holmberg could earn an automatic spot in the Championships with a total over 7,000 points.
The decathlon will conclude tomorrow in Aberdeen with the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1,600-meter run.
