Vikings stun Iowa with buzzer beater by Jansen in exhibition finale

IOWA CITY, Iowa –
Daniel Jansen hit a jumper as time expired to lift No. 1 Augustana men's basketball to a 76-74 exhibition win over the University of Iowa in front of 12,874 fans on Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Vikings got the ball with 28 seconds left in the game and called a timeout with 11 seconds left on the clock to set up the eventual game-winning shot.
 
Augustana got the ball into the hands of Jansen, a 6-foot-9 240-pound native of Orange City, Iowa, who hit a jumper over his former AAU teammate Adam Woodbury to give the Vikings a 76-74 win over the Hawkeyes.
 
Augustana led by as much as 15 in the second half before the Hawkeyes put on some pressure on the defense end and got within two on a jumper by Jarrod Uthoff with 5:09 to play. The Vikings were able to keep the lead until Peter Jok nailed a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left to tie the game at 74.
 
Augustana had a chance to extend the lead before the Jok 3-pointer but the Hawkeyes forced a turnover and eventually tied the game. The Vikings brought the ball up the court to hold for the last shot before calling a timeout with 11 seconds left. Jansen got the ball on the left wing and worked his way into some separation and dropped in a floater with the right hand to send the Vikings to victory over the Hawkeyes on their home floor.
 
Jansen finished the game with 19 points and four rebounds despite playing in foul trouble most of the night. He was called for two early in the game and made the game-winning shot after playing the final 4:42 with four fouls.
 
Casey Schilling had a huge game for the Vikings as well in 37 minutes of play. Schilling recorded a double-double leading the Vikings with 20 points and 11 rebounds to go along with two blocks.
 
Adam Beyer was solid on both of the courts as well finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds, including eight on the defensive boards. Jordan Spencer added six points, five assists and five rebounds while Zach Huisken had a big night off the bench picking up seven points, five rebounds and three assists. ­­
 
Jok finished with a game-high 21 points for the Hawkeyes hitting 7 of 18 shots from the field, including three 3-pointers. Mike Gesell added 14 points and nine assists while Jarrod Uthoff finished with 10 points on 5 of 12 shooting.
 
Iowa jumped out to an 8-0 lead early in the game as the Vikings started cold from the field, missing their first 12 shots of the contest. The Hawkeyes extended their lead to 12-2 when Peter Jok hit a basket on the fastbreak after a Viking turnover.
 
Augustana answered with a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 13-12 lead with 10:30 remaining in the first half. Jok tied the game at 15 with a 3-pointer at the 9:34 mark of the first half but the Vikings regained the lead at 18-15 after a 3-pointer by Schilling and never lost it for the remainder of the half.
 
Augustana hit five 3-pointers in the final eight minutes and led by as much as 11 before taking a 40-34 lead into the locker room.
 
After a slow start, Augustana shot 39.5 percent from the field hitting 15 of 38, including 6 of 13 from behind the arc. Schilling led the Vikings with 15 points and six rebounds through 20 minutes of play. Jansen and Zach Huisken each had seven points in the first half.
 
The Hawkeyes were led by Jok's 14 points in the first half. Dale Jones added eight points off the bench on 3 of 5 shooting, including 2 of 3 from behind the arc.
 
Augustana came out strong in the second half building a 14-point lead three minutes into the period when Beyer scored on a layup to push the Vikings' lead to 54-40.
 
Beyer would later give the Vikings a 15-point lead at 61-46 with just under 15 minutes to play. The Hawkeyes answered with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to nine at 63-54 before slowly chipping away at the Vikings' lead.
 
The Hawkeyes used a 16-5 run over an eight minute stretch of the second half to get within two, 66-64, on a jumper by Uthoff.
 
Augustana answered by scoring on two straight possessions after a Hawkeye turnover but were unable to push the lead larger than six in the final five minutes of the contest.
 
The Vikings maintained the lead late until the two late 3-pointers by Iowa which would give Augustana the ball and a chance to win on the final shot of the game.
 
Augustana will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 13, taking on Washburn University in Las Vegas, Nev.
