Amy Jorgensen Sumner is among the Vikings' best. During her four seasons, the Vikings were 126-57; Amy was named All-NCC all four years and conference MVP in 1986. She was named to the all-region team in both 1986 and 1987, and an All-American in 1987. To add to her honors, she was named the College Female Athlete of the Year in 1986 by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association.
Amy said she has many memories but a highlight was the 1986 conference tournament in Omaha when the Vikings came back to win the title. She pitched "over 20 innings that day; it was a long exhausting day with a great turnout." She did not yield an earned run in 13 innings and hit two doubles.
In the spring of 1985, she posted a 0.47 earned run average; that stands now as the second best on the school record book. Amy wrote, "Being involved in intercollegiate athletics has been a rewarding experience for me and has promoted characteristics that enhance my personal and professional life. ...I consider my strengths to be confidence, competitiveness, and a strong sense of determination and leadership."
