The Augustana Men's Tennis Program captured ten conference titles in the North Central Conference. Led by Butch Ross, they nearly captured title number eleven in 1990.
Butch was a four-year letterwinner for the men's tennis team. Each year he was the #1 player for the Vikings. He finished third his freshman year, second his sophomore year, and won back-to-back NCC titles his junior and senior years. Butch posted a 23-0 record in 1990 and advanced to the 64-man NCAA Division II Championships, where he lost in the first round to a player from California State Hayward. He finished the year ranked #49 in the nation in singles. Butch also teamed with Kyle Jordre to win the NCC #1 Doubles title in 1990 after finishing second in 1989. Augustana was runner-up to St.Cloud State University at the NCC Championships by two points in 1990.
Butch was a two-sport participant at Augustana. For four years he was also a member of the football team. He held punter, special teams, and backup quarterback responsibilities for the 1988 and 1989 NCAA Division II Playoff football teams.
One of his fondest memories is of the conference doubles final in 1990. He said, "The doubles final with Kyle Jordre at the conference championships in 1990 was great. All the football and basketball players were pounding on the window at Woodlake cheering us on."
