As the first Viking women’s golfer to be inducted into the Augustana Athletics Hall of Fame, Carley (Roach) McMacken cemented herself as one of the top performers in Division II. From 2005-08, she was an All-North Central Conference honoree and was the NCC Medalist in 2005 with rounds of 82-76-73-231. Carley went on to win the 2006 NCAA Division II Regional Championship with rounds of 74-76-80-230 as Augustana placed 5th overall. Roach was named Honorable Mention to the National Golf Coaches Association All-America teams in 2006 and 2008. During the 2005-06 season, she took home first place in six team competitions. As a freshman, Carley tied for third at the NCC Championship with rounds of 78-79-82-239 and tied for fourth her senior year with rounds of 75-81-80-236.
At the 2008 North Regional Championships, Carley tied for fourth with rounds of 78-75-72-225 to help the Vikings to a Runner-Up title. Without a doubt, the 2008 Division II National Tournament down in Houston, Texas, was the most memorable for Roach. She would go on to tie for 27th place along with teammate Courtney Belanger, as Augustana placed eighth overall.
Two people that influenced Carley during her time at Augustana were her advisor, Reynold Nesiba, and Larry Borgum, Associate Director of Financial Aid.
“Borgum helped me and my family navigate the Financial Aid process and made it more financially possible for me to attend Augustana!”
The Brookings native graduated from Augustana in 2008 with a degree in Sport Management. She returned home to work in the Admissions Office at South Dakota State University where she currently serves as the Program Coordinator. She is an active member of the Women in Leadership and Learning Committee through the Brookings Chamber of Commerce, as well as a fitness instructor at B.Well Brookings. Carley and her husband, Billy, have three children: Thomas, Camden and Kendall.
