Augustana University Athletics

Howlin has been termed by many as one of Augustana's finest all-time broken field runners and at one time held five school rushing records, two of which (894 net yards in a season and 33 rushing attempts in a game) stood after 17 years. He was ranked 5th among all-time Viking rushers.

Howlin was an All-North Central Conference and Williamson Mid-bracket All-American performer in his senior year under Coach Bob Burns. The 1956 Vikings pulled the "Upset of the Year" – a 14-12 surprise of the USD Coyotes and the S.D. Sportswriters' only difficulty was in deciding if that upstaged the Vikings' 21-20 win over the SDSU Jackrabbits or the 13-6 win over Northern Iowa. The 1956 Vikings were also named "S.D. College Team of the Year."

Howlin participated in track for four years. He was a member of Augie's NCC frosh 880 relays champs. As a varsity performer he was a point getter in the indoor dashes and broad jump and the outdoor 100, low hurdles and relays. As a junior he took second behind Augie teammate Tom Rohwer in the NCC low hurdles and was captain of the squad as a senior.

Howlin was named as a halfback on Sioux Falls "Mythical 100 Year Football Team" and remained active, including play with and coaching a local area hockey team for some time.

Chuck was a second generation Augustana athlete, his Dad, the late Ed Howlin lettered in football here in the late ‘20s.  Chuck was also an optometrist in Sioux Falls for many years.
