"Run fast" and "Jump high" are relatively simple commands that Daryl Watson took to new highs as a trackman at Augustana.
As a sophomore, Daryl set the still-standing school record of 24-feet, 11 3/4 inches in the long jump at the 1982 Drake Relays. That effort qualified him for the NCAA-Division II nationals in Sacramento, California. In 1983, Daryl was the NCC champion in the indoor long jump, and holds the school record of 24 feet, 5 inches.
Daryl holds the still-standing Augustana record of 44 feet, 8 inches for the indoor triple jump; he set the record of 44 feet for the outdoor triple jump, which has since been broken. Also during 1982, Daryl set the 100 meter dash record of 10.8 seconds; that record has since fallen.
Back at the Drake Relays in 1984, Daryl was the anchor on the 4x100 relay team consisting of Todd (Hernandez) St. Louis, Jeff Gross, and Tom Brown. They ran in a school record time of 41.39 seconds, another record that still stands. Eight Vikings qualified for the Division II Nationals that year. Daryl says that was a memorable event in his career.
