Elkins teamed with Viking All-American Wayne Sheley to give Augustana one of the most explosive backfields in its history during the 1936 and 1937 seasons. The 1937 outfit was undefeated and untied in eight games. During four years of competition Elkins helped the Vikings to a 28-4-1 mark with his sensational ball carrying abilities.
A speedy 150-pounder, Elkins starred on the basketball court where he was twice named to the all-conference team and led the Vikes in scoring during his junior and senior years. The student newspaper described him as a "horsehide honey" for his exploits on the baseball diamond and he also received plaudits as an exceptional volleyball player.
