Gary Baumann transferred to Augustana from Dawson County Junior College in Glendive, Mont., and became an instant basketball success.
A hard driving, six foot guard, Baumann became well known for his acrobatic lay-ups but his game was well accented with effective outside shooting. Using this potent combination, Baumann was able to become all-conference in the NCC and a Midwest College All-American his senior year. He accumulated some impressive statistics. His 21.7 points per game scoring average afor the 1968-69 season includes a Holiday Tournament single record of 38 points. He scored 943 points in his 48 games for a career average of 19.6 points per game.
Gary holds many Holiday Tournament scoring records which have stood the test of time. In three games, he had 36 field goals; in one game, he made 12-12 free throws; he made 24 of 26 (.923) from the free throw line in a three game stretch, and he scored 96 points during the tourney.
