Her considerable skills as a player served Jeanne Tostenson well when she entered the coaching ranks.
As the Vikings' lead-off hitter and center fielder, she was chosen to the All-North Central Conference team all four years. In addition, she was twice selected to the All-North Central Region team.
With Tostenson in the lineup, Augustana won conference championships in 1992 and 1993. The Vikings claimed the North Central Region title in 1993 and went on to capture runner-up honors at the NCAA Division II championships."We lost to Florida Southern, but a big reason I came to Augie was to have the opportunity to compete for the championship," she says.
Tostenson holds NCC records for total hits in a tournament (13), total runs (10), and fewest strikeouts (0-for-22 at-bats). She also owns the highest batting average for the 1995 tournament (.590).
Winning the 1993 NCC tournament was one of many memorable career moments for Jeanne."The tournament was held in Mankato,Minn., where I grew up. I was able to score the winning run on a hit by Angie Hopkins in the bottom of the seventh inning against Morningside."
In 1993, Jeanne set the school record for most-at-bats (252). She hit .337 her freshman year and .378 in each her junior and senior years. She collected 76 singles in 1994 and was perfect in the field.
Jeanne cites her Augustana coaches along with Mark Hecht,Karen Madsen, and Bill Gross for inspiring her pursuit of a career in athletics.
