If the NCAA were to identify the exemplary student-athlete, Jenny Hill would be a leading candidate. At Augustana she excelled in both academics and athletics.
She was a four-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America choice (1998-2001), and shared the North Central Conference’s Most Valuable Player award (2001). Hill majored in biology, was a Dean’s List scholar and a member of the Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society. In 2001 she was recognized as the South Dakota Woman of the Year by the NCAA. Equally adept on the mound and at the plate, the left-hander registered two perfect games versus the University of North Dakota and Bemidji State. In 2001 she led all of Division 2 in hits and runs-batted-in. Four times she earned a spot on the All-North Central Conference team (1998-2001).
She was among the nation’s top 30 hitters for three seasons (1998, 2000, 2001). Career records at Augustana included most hits in a season and career, most RBI in a season and career, and most doubles in a season and career. School pitching records included most saves in a season and career. During Hill’s four seasons, the Vikings' record was a sterling 207-55.
Such numbers generated many special moments for Hill. “The game we beat St. Cloud at Bowden Field to win the region and advance to nationals my freshman year,” Hill recalls. “Pitching two perfect games, and playing for a Hall of Fame coach (Sandy Jerstad), who made history with more than a thousand wins in her career; Kim Kouri ’91, who assisted in some coaching duties and was a big influence and mentor through my career.”
She also cites Sherry Barkley for giving her “great career insight and direction,” and Karen Madsen and Larry Borgum “for their support and helping make some of my opportunities happen."
