Silliman was in the middle of the action. In 1965 the Vikings struggled to a 1-6-1 record, one year later won five of nine games. Included in that 1966 season were wins over USD, Morningside, Gustavus Adolphus, Augustana-Rock Island, and Hiram Scott. Coach Jim Malmquist and his team tied for third place in the NCC that year.

Jim wrote that as a sophomore, "We got beat by Morningside 70-0. It was a LONG day. As a senior, we came back during the game to beat the same players 43-38."

Jim was the mainstay of the offensive line for the Vikings. As a freshman he earned the Viking Club Award. As a senior he was team captain and team MVP; he was named to the All-NCC and All-Lutheran teams and earned NCC Player of the Week honors several times. He was named to the 1967 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

As a business administration major, he graduated in 1967; he earned a master's degree from Mankato State University in 1971.
