John R. Doyle came to Augustana in 1934 as a transfer from Eastern Normal in Madison. Before attending Eastern Normal, where he was an all conference quarterback, John lived in Pierre, S.D.

As a Viking, John played under coach L.A. "Lefty" Olson. In 1935 and 1936, the years in which John was quarterback, the Vikings were undefeated in conference play and overall, were 6-2 in 1935 and 7-2 in 1936. In those years with John as quarterback, the Vikings outscored their opponents 352 to 145.

John's statistics showed him to have been a very versatile player. He was adept at running and passing on offense, a secondary defender on defense and a kick return specialist on special teams. John's efforts earned him all-conference honors in both 1934 and 1935. He was also a team leader which is evidenced by his being selected as team captain in 1935.

After Augustana, John spent two years with the armed services. He was a member of the 45th Division in Germany. As a solider, John was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart. He was discharged as a sergeant.
