Jon Harris brought many skills to Augustana football, but one ability was especially appreciated by Coach Jim Heinitz. “Jon was a tremendous blocker,” Heinitz said. So, after filling a defensive role with the Vikings, Harris was switched to offense. A running back/wide receiver, he often was the lead blocker for Chris San Agustin, who amassed a long list of Viking rushing records. In 1989 Harris led Augustana receivers with 45 receptions for 652 yards and five touchdowns. He was also the team leader in punt returns, was third in kickoff returns, third in scoring, and second in all-purpose yards. For the 1988 season he posted 27 catches for 342 yards and three touchdowns. The Vikings won 17 of 24 games in 1988 and 1989. “Starting in my first game as a true freshman,” was a special moment for Harris and he contributed immediately. “In the first series I made a tackle on a swing pass and forced Sioux Falls College to punt.” His senior season was made extra special with wins against both South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota.
Harris was named to the All-NCC first team in 1989. And his play was a big reason the Vikings advanced to post-season play in 1988 and 1989. A trio of Augustana professors had a special influence on Harris’ academic pursuits. “Drs. Gene Nichols and Steve Van Bockern always made you think outside the box and challenged you,” he said. “Dr. Fredrick Rusch made you look deep inside yourself and wanted you to think for yourself.” Harris was inducted into the Sioux Falls Washington High School Hall of Fame in 1990. He earned all-state and all-conference honors with the Warriors and also competed in track, basketball, and baseball.
