A Regents scholar…Biology major…Dean's list…cum laude graduate…and two-sport star. Those words all describe Kris Fering, a 1986 graduate.

Kris came to Augustana from Blue Earth, MN on a tennis and basketball scholarship. Midway through basketball, she realized she would not have enough time to practice tennis, so Coach Betty Hoeger (aunt of Sandy Jerstad) allowed her to switch her scholarship to softball. Kris credits her baseball coach dad with her softball skills.

On the court, Kris tallied 662 career points and was sixth on the career chart. She is among the top single season record holders as she scored 245 points in 25 games as a freshman. Kris was All-NCC Academic in 1985.

At first base on the softball diamonds, she earned All-NCC honors in 1983, 1984 and 1985 and All-NCC Academic honors in 1984, 1985, and 1986. The Vikings won the NCC softball title in 1983 and 1986, were second in 1984, and third in 1985.  The 1983 and 1986 teams participated in the NCAA Regionals, as well. In 1986, Kris led the team with a .994 fielding average and set an NCC tourney record that still stands with 58 putouts.

Kris wrote about their 1986 Spring Break trip to California; they had not played outside at all due to snow. Following a 2 AM hotel arrival, they played the defending national champs at 8 AM and only lost 1-0. Kris was named to that all-tournament team. Other memorable highlights included defeating Iowa State the University of Minnesota, plus beating UNO twice in the 1986 NCC championship and finishing at 12:30 AM.
