Lee Brandt was recruited for Augustana football from his hometown of Coon Rapids, Minn., where he was a three sport star in football, basketball, and baseball. He quarterbacked the Viking freshman squad, then was converted to a defensive secondary man until taking over as a first string quarterback early in his junior year. He went on to rack up over 3,000 yards in total offense—nearly 2,500 passing and just under 600 rushing in two years.
His biggest thrill as a Viking came in an upset win at Northern Iowa in his senior year. He gained a record 229 yards rushing with scampers of 34, 15, 62 and 90 yards and two touchdowns—and added 109 yards passing as well.
Lee was a Viking tri-captain, made honorable mention All-North Central, the All-Lutheran team and his teammates voted him their Leadership Award.
On the basketball court he was a freshman starter and averaged over 12 points a game, was a starting guard as a junior and senior playing with the scoring phenomenon Gary Baumann. Coach Ed Stevens usually assigned him the opponent's quickest man to guard and called him "one of the best overall athletes to ever complete for Augustana."
But it was in baseball where he earned his greatest laurels. He was a three-year regular at second base, batting in the .250 range, fielding over .960 while committing only 15 errors, leading the team in stolen bases and earning All-North Central recognition. Lee was an honor student and active in other student activities during his collegiate years.
