Mark was a geography major at Augie, and remembers being called by Virg Sandvig once when he overslept his class. "Smed, get over here. We're not starting without you."

He was voted to the Viking Days royalty as a senior.

Following graduation, Mark continued to play basketball professionally in Europe. From 1983-85 he played in Ockelbo, Sweden, and then played nine years in Oldenburg, Germany. In 1995, he was named Sports Person of the Year in Oldenburg.
