Kochenderfer, who played at Hendricks, Minn., high school, earned 13 varsity letters at Augustana, including four each in football, basketball, track and one in wrestling. He captained the 1932 football team and the 1934 conference championship basketball squad. In track he competed in the 100, 220, 440, high jump, the 800, mile and spring medley teams and in the broad jump where his school mark stood.
"Koch" was called the most sensational open field runner of his time in South Dakota and during his senior year had a phenomenal 10 ½ yard per carry average for the season. He was named Augustana's Honor Athlete and was president of the "A" Club and in his senior year was student body president.
