Because of his ability as a receiver, blocker and defender, Mike Nelson seldom rested during three varsity football seasons.
In 1960 he lettered with the freshman football team which defeated South Dakota State University and Morningisde during a three-game schedule. Nelson earned varsity letters the next three seasons and was elected co-captain his senior year.
During his first season with the varsity he caught seven passes for 131 yards. The next year he caught eight passes for 126 yards and one touchdown. He also returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and caught a conversion pass for a total of 15 points.
In 1963 he led the Vikings in receptions with 22 and yards receiving with 353. He was the team's second leading scorer with 18 points.
Nelson became a starter before the end of his sophomore season. He was a role he retained through the next two years.
