Nicky Johnsen had the perfect answer when Nebraska-Omaha invaded the Elmen Center for a North Central Conference women's basketball encounter in 1993. The sophomore from Wakonda, S.D.,was on the court for just 18 minutes but scored 17 points to share scoring honors for the Vikings in a 99-72 win. She made all eight of her field goal attempts and her lone free throw was also good. Augustana finished the 1992-93 season with a 24-5 record. Included was a 10-game win streak, a 12-0 mark at home, and first-ever back-to-back wins over North Dakota
and North Dakota State.
Johnsen is among Augustana's scoring (1,258 points), rebound (674), and shot block (141) career leaders. She was selected to All-North Central Conference teams in 1994 and 1995, and in 1994 shared first place in the conference for free-throw percentage (.870). She is eighth in career NCC free throw percentage (.833), and was 19th nationally (.814) in 1995. But the on-court accomplishments were secondary to Johnsen. "What I remember most were my teammates,"she said."I had some of the nicest, hard working, and fun-loving women on my team. Some of them I looked up to, and, some of them I mentored, but all in all, those are the memories that make me smile the most."
