Johnson retired as the athletic director of Brookings High School after serving 30 years, is also a member of the Howard Wood Relays Hall of Fame and has served as the honorary referee for the Wood Dakota Relays.
He was a versatile four sport star who earned four letters each in football, basketball and track and also played baseball for Augustana in the late 1920's. Although he had played no football during high school at Sinai, Johnson became a starter during his sophomore year and was named to the South Dakota Conference all-star team as a senior quarterback.
He was a four year basketball starter for the Vikings and the team's most prolific scorer; in at least one instance scoring all of his team's points. In track he established and held for a time the school record of :50.8 in the 440 and was a member of record setting half mile, mile and sprint medley relay teams.
His long career in athletics and physical education has brought him a great many honors by his peers.
