Miedema was part of a resurgence of Viking basketball fortunes under Coach Ole Odney which began when he and a group of other talented freshmen enrolled here in 1958. He was a letterman for his full three years; his team's leading scorer for two years and a member of the conference co-championship team in 1961-62. He still ranks among the top 15 all-time scorers despite playing in only 59 varsity games in three years. He earned all-conference honors twice and was the 1962 "Honor Athlete."
