Versatile is a good word to describe Rich Risner on the football field.
Risner was captain of a Viking football team in 1953 that had only twenty-seven players on the roster. Lack of depth played a major role in the team winning only once in nine starts; however, Risner stood out and was named to the All-NCC team as the Vikings' center. Like other players on the team, Risner played offense and defense. He also excelled at linebacker and halfback during his collegiate career.
Rich didn't single out a specific game or moment that stood out in his mind while at Augustana. He wrote, "All of our games were memorable, especially during the 1953 season." Each of his coaches (Jerry Thompson, Lefty Olson, Lyn Wells, and Vic Pederson) had a memorable impact on Rich. He also respected President Lawrence Stavig as, "a man of direction, dedication, and
leadership."
Following graduation, Risner had a distinguished career in the military. He served 25 years with the Marines, retiring in 1975 with the rank of Major. During his tour he served in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. His military honors include the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars with combat V, Purple Heart with Gold Star, Navy Commendation and Navy Achievement Medals, and POW Medal.
