Carlson lettered in basketball for the Vikings, but his greatest achievements came in tennis. In 1946 he was undefeated in both singles and doubles (with Ken Fladmark) . The next year he was undefeated in singles and, teaming variously with "Lefty" Johnson and Bob Harum, lost only to the Minnesota Gophers in doubles on the way with Harum to the NCC crown.
He also was the NCC singles champ in 1948 and retained it in 1949 when the league meet was rained out.
