Ron Charlson seldom left the trenches in three seasons of Augustana football. Recruited as a fullback, he played guard on offense and linebacker on defense, helping the Vikings to a record of 17-7-1 over three seasons. The Vikings finished third in the North Central Conference in 1958, won the title in 1959, and were runners-up in 1960.
Ron was an All-North Central Conference selection in 1959 and 1960. In 1976, long-time South Dakota sportscaster Danny Olson selected Charlson to his Silver Anniversary Augustana all-star football team for 1951-1976 as an offensive guard. In tennis, he prevailed in his only intercollegiate match and finished his career with a 1-0 record!
Ron described playing for the legendary Augustana coach, Bob Burns, by writing, "Playing three years for Coach Bob Burns was an education in football, psychology, life, and how to have fun while striving diligently to accomplish goals." He was also influenced by two Augustana Biology instructors, Dr. Sven Froiland and Dr. Dilwyn Rogers. "These two fine men impressed me with their knowledge of nature, the great outdoors, South Dakota, and Midwest wildlife passions in my life then and now."
