Pettinger, who died in 1942 at the age of 29 of Hodgkins Disease resulting in leukemia, was Augustana's first All-American, being named to the AP's honorable mention list in the days before Little All-American choices were made.

A guard and tackle who began his Augie career weighing 152 on a line which averaged 167, Pettinger was picked as the outstanding lineman of the game in his first college game. He went on to earn all-conference championship units.
