In 1978 Sam Herriman made Augustana history by becoming the first Viking wrestling to win a national championship. He won the 126-pound title in the North Central Conference tournament and went on to top the field at the NCAA-Division II championships.

Following his national championship, Sam was invited to compete on the NCAA All-Star Team in Mexico City in 1978.

As a senior, Sam was team captain, posted a 27-6 record and was NCC champ again at 126 pounds.

Sam is a three time NCAA-Division II All-American. He was listed in Who's Who Among American College Students in 1979 and received honorary citizenship from then-Governor Bill Janklow. As a student he was president of Men's Senate and an FCA member. He graduated from Augustana in 1980 with a degree in history.
