Steve George came to Augustana College from Redwood Falls, Minnesota, in 1965, and provided the ground threat for the Viking football team until his graduation in 1969.
His football career blossomed during his sophomore year when he rushed 98 times for gains of 423 yards. His offensive output escalated by the time he was a senior, and he carried the ball a record 188 times that year, gaining 695 yards. During his career, he rushed 406 times for 1464 total yards to break the school record previously held by Les Josephson. He scored 114 points during his career, and returned kick-offs 334 yards for an average of 17.6 yards.
Steve lettered each of his last three years, despite being sidelined for injuries during most of his junior year. As a senior, he was co-captain of the team and team's most valuable player. George distinguished himself as an All Conference player, receiving honorable mention in 1968. He also occupied a seat on the men's senate, and ran for student association vice-president.
