Terry Nutter was a star running back for the Viking football team from 1970-1973. By the time he was graduated in 1973, he had tallied up 2,536 total yards.

The two-time All-NCC player rushed for 1,003 yards his senior year, scored 16 touchdowns for 96 points, and set school records for yards, points, and touchdowns. His single-season rushing record stood until 1989. Terry's efforts earned him the team's most valuable player status for an offensive player, and also a post on the first team all-Lutheran football team. Twice earlier he had received honorable mention on that same all-Lutheran team.

The New England Patriots and the Minnesota Vikings both signed him in 1974.

In 1985, he received his masters degree from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
