Prior to kickoff for the final game of the 1990 football season, Troy Westwood approached head coach Jim Heinitz. "He said he hoped he would get the opportunity to win a game for me, "Heinitz said. With 90 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Westwood kicked a 35-yard field goal handing Augustana a 16-14 win over Mankato State. The Vikings rallied from a 14-0 deficit for the win, and Westwood's successful kick secured the Vikings' third straight winning season in North Central Conference play.
Westwood was the 48th overall pick in the 1991 Canadian football college draft. He led the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in scoring for 15 seasons and holds the Canadian Football League record for highest career field goal percentage in playoff games (85.7). He was inducted into the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame this year.
He holds the Augustana record for conversion kicks in a season (41) and is second in career conversion kicks (107). He was a key contributor to Augustana's first two teams (1988 and 1989) to qualify for the NCAA playoffs. A member of the Canadian national soccer team at age 16, Westwood set an Augustana school record with 35 consecutive PATs. He was also strong in the classroom, earning Academic All-NCC distinction in 1989.
