BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- Augustana track & field earned two awards Thursday from the NSIC as Tyl Woelber was named the NSIC Field Athlete of the Year and assistant coach Scott Tanis was named the NSIC Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.
Woelber, the league's Field Athlete of the Year, made good on that title by winning two events at the NSIC Outdoor Championships. He recorded his victories in the decathlon and javelin. He won half the events in the decathlon, with victories in the shot put, high jump, 400m dash, discus and javelin throw. En route to his win, he tallied an NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark of 7,302 points to punch his ticket to the outdoor meet. He also broke the school record in the high jump, floating to a height of 6-11.25.Â
On the final day of the NSIC Outdoor Championships, Woelber defended his 2019 javelin title by throwing a new personal-best, and school record, with a heave of 206-4.50.Â
Coach Tanis' group accounted for 68 of Augustana's points, just over 75% of the total points scored for the Vikings at the NSIC Outdoor Championships. The Vikings, overseen by Tanis, also secured six all-conference spots and one conference champion in Rebekah Rairdon in the 3,000m steeplechase.
Over the season, Tanis also had an athlete break a school record in Patty Jo English running 16:20.53 in the 5,000m.Â
Both English and Woelber will be competing at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Allendale, Michigan. The championships are scheduled to take place May 27-29.
