The Augustana women's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat Upper Iowa 2-1 Saturday afternoon, making head coach Brandon Barkus the winningest coach in the program's history.
The Vikings improved to 8-2-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as they won their third-straight game. The win tied the school record for wins in a season, set last season. Barkus, who is in his third season with the Vikings, eclipsed Steve Burckhalter's mark of 20 career wins. Barkus has a 21-22-5 record at Augie.
Emily Gielau gave Upper Iowa a 1-0 lead when she scored an unassisted goal on a shot from 20 yards out. The ball hit the cross bar before going into the goal.
Katie Shandri led Augie's comeback by scoring 2 goals. She netted her first goal on a shot from 18 yards out at the 49:43 mark. She scored the game-winning goal when she took a pass from Raelyn Walczak and scored from 25 yards at 59:43. Shandri now has a team-high 7 goals.
The Viking defense then preserved the win by holding Upper Iowa to 9 shots in the half. Lisa Jarovski picked up the win by making 7 saves as she improved to 6-1-0.
Augustana outshot the Peacocks 27-13, including a 12-8 edge in shots on goal.
Augustana concludes its weekend road trip by visiting Winona State on Sunday at 1 p.m. WSU is ranked third in the country.
