Viking Soccer Drops Match to #3 Winona State, 5-0

One day after tying the record for victories in a season, the Augustana soccer team was defeated by #3 Winona State, 5-0, Sunday in Winona, Minn.  

The loss drops the Vikings to 8-3-1 overall and to 5-2-0 in the NSIC Conference.  Winona State improves to 12-1-0 overall and leads the NSIC with a 7-0-0 record.  Despite giving up 5 goals to WSU, the Vikings rank third in the NSIC in goals given up with 12 on the season.

Winona State opened an early 1-0 lead at the 4:30 mark when Lauren Sturdivant scored on a Amelia Kasten assist.  The Warriors added another at the 24:38 mark from Kendal Straessle and Richelle Shannon added one 22 seconds before the half to put WSU up 3-0.  In the second half, Augie held WSU scoreless for most of the period, but WSU was able to add two late goals in the period from Melissa Sellier and Sturdivant for the 5-0 victory.

Lisa Jarovski played the entire 90 minutes in net for the Vikings, registering three saves.  Stephanie Goos led the Vikings with four shots and one shot-on-goal, while Katelyn Ley tallied two shots.  The Vikings made 11 shots and one shot-on-goal.

The Vikings will return home to Yankton Trail Park next weekend.  They will face Minnesota State Saturday at noon, and will play Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
