The Augustana volleyball team had its eight-match winning streak snapped when Southwest Minnesota State handed the Vikings a 3-0 defeat by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 Friday night in Marshall, Minn.
The 20th-ranked Vikings fell to 18-7 overall and 10-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while SMSU, ranked No. 4 in the nation, improved to 22-3 overall and 11-2 in the NSIC.
The first set was tied late in the set at 18-18. SMSU led 22-21 before scoring three of the next four points to take the set.
In the second set, Southwest Minnesota State grabbed an early 5-0 lead. Augustana pulled within three points at 10-7 before the Mustangs went on a 9-5 run to extend the lead to 19-12. The Vikings tried to rally, using a 5-2 spurt to make it 21-17 but that was as close as they would get.
Augustana took a small 6-5 lead in the third set when SMSU used a 9-1 rally to take a 14-7 lead. Later in the set, the Vikings trailed 21-14 when they went on a 5-1 run to close within three at 22-19 before SMSU closed out the match with a 3-2 run.
Kati Newgard was the only Viking in double figures in kills with 11. She finished the match with a .375 attack percentage.
Beth Talcott and
Ellen Andrews were next with 9 kills apiece.
Cayla Schroeder led three Vikings in double figures in digs with 15.
Brianna Erickson was next with 11, while Talcott had 10.
Lisa Hoegh had 33 assists.
The Vikings conclude their weekend road trip at Minnesota State University, Mankato, on Saturday at 4 p.m.
