Augustana's Matt Lien Named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week

Augustana football player Matt Lien has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Augustana's 41-38 overtime victory over Minnesota State University, Mankato, on Saturday.

Lien, a 6-3, 215-pound senior linebacker from Duluth, Minn., had a big day defensively in leading Augustana past Minnesota State. Lien had 8 solo tackles and 4 assists for 12 total tackles. He also had 2 quarterback hurries and intercepted a pass late in the fourth quarter that stopped a potential game-winning drive for the Mavericks.

Lien is the third Viking to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors. Brian Baumgartner was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week on September 2 and Joe Clark was the Offensive Player of the Week on September 29.

Augustana improved to 4-2 on the season and 4-1 in the NSIC with the victory over Minnesota State. In addition, the Vikings took over sole possession of the lead in the NSIC Southern Division with a 2-0 record.

The Vikings will be at home again this week when they entertain Southwest Minnesota State University in a 1 p.m. contest at Howard Wood Field.
