Turnovers Costly as Viking Football Loses at Winona State, 41-24

The Augustana football team committed six turnovers to help Winona State defeat the Vikings, 41-24, Saturday in Winona, Minn. The Vikings fall to 6-4 on the season and 6-3 in the NSIC, while Winona State improves to 6-4 overall, 6-3 in the league.

The Vikings outgained WSU in total yardage, 461 to 349, but the costly giveaways led to 14 Winona State points and flipped the field position several times in favor of the Warriors.

After a few early field goals, Tyler Schulte completed a 75-yard touchdown pass to Sam Holsen to put the Vikings up, 10-6, with 5:19 left in the second quarter. Schulte started under center for the Vikings and went 14-of-29 on the day for 219 yards, with three interceptions.

Winona State answered on a touchdown run to go up 13-10, and after returning a Schulte interception deep into Viking territory, added a field goal to lead 16-10 at halftime. 

In the second half, an early interception by Schulte gave WSU the ball in Augie territory. A 17-yard touchdown pass and successful two-point conversion gave WSU the lead 24-10. WSU added a 3-yard touchdown run to take their largest lead at 31-10.

The Vikings would begin to charge back. With 1:30 left in the third quarter, Schulte scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to bring the Vikings back to within 14 at 31-17.

After stopping the Warriors, the Vikings began to mount a drive that was stalled when WSU forced and recovered a fumble on a Ryan Rank reception. The Vikings held, and once again had the ball deep in WSU territory, when the Warriors' Lucas Wolf intercepted a Schulte pass at the WSU 4 and returned it 86 yards to the Augie 10-yard line. WSU added a field goal to go up 34-17.

Schulte added another late 1-yard touchdown run to draw the Vikings within 10, but WSU returned the ensuing onside kickoff for a touchdown and the final score, 41-24.

Joe Clark rushed for 63 yards on 11 carries, while Jeremy Huber had 49 yards on 12 carries.  Defensively, Brian Baumgartner and Matt Lien led the Vikings with 13 tackles each, while Chris Janisch contributed 12.

The Vikings conclude the regular season next Saturday when they head to Aberdeen, S.D., to take on Northern State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
