Augustana Earns First NSIC Victory in a 65-54 Road Win Over Wayne State

The Augustana women's basketball team turned up the offense and earned their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win in a 65-54 over Wayne State on the road Friday night.

With the win, the Vikings snap a three game losing streak and move to 5-3 on the season and 1-2 in conference play, while the Wildcats move to 4-5 and 2-1 in NSIC play.

In a fast and furious first half, it was a game of big point runs as both teams fired back at one another, piling up points in quick bursts.

The Vikings scored the first points of the game, but shortly after, the Wildcats opened up an 8-0 run in the first three minutes of play to go up 8-2. After a quick timeout, the Vikings responded with an 11-0 run of their own to go up 13-8.

The Vikings had a 14-point lead at 31-17 with 7:15 left in the half, but the Wildcats came right back firing up three pointers to bring the game to 37-33 at the half in favor of the Vikings.

In the first half, Augustana shot 40 percent from the field (15-38) and 42 percent from the three point line (5-12).

Whitney Hofer led all Vikings with nine points in the first half and added five rebounds, while Amy Puthoff scored eight points on 2-3 shooting in just 11 minutes of play.

In the second half the Wildcats would continue to run as they went on a 13-3 run in the first seven minutes of the second half and 33-7 run after being down by 14 early in the game.

Megan Doyle would respond for the Vikings after starting the game 0-6, she would score the eight quick points to put the Vikings up 50-46 during a 10-0 run.

The Vikings would finish strong, with Dani Arens leading the way with nine points in the final six minutes to close out the Wildcats. She would also record seven rebounds in the game.

Puthoff would lead all Vikings with 14 points on 4-10 shooting from the three point line, as she did not take a two-point field goal in the game.

Hofer would record her second double-double this season after scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. 

Ashlie Traynor had a career-high seven rebounds in the contest.

The Vikings would attack the offensive class against the Wildcats, as the team combined for 15 offensive rebounds on the night, which led to 17 second chance points.

The Vikings will move on to play Missouri Western State (0-8) in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Elmen Center.
