Augie Women's Basketball Earns Second Straight Victory After 86-57 Win Over Missouri Western

The Augustana women's basketball team was able to revenge a 79-75 loss to Western Missouri last season, as the Vikings beat up on the Griffons 86-57 Wednesday night in the Elmen Center. 

It is the second win in a row for the Vikings as they move to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in NSIC play. The senior-less Griffons remain winless this season going 0-8 and 0-3 in MIAA action. 

All five Augustana starters would score in the first three minutes as the Vikings got off to a fast 10-0 start in the first half. At the halfway mark of the first half, the Griffons had made only two field goals and found themselves in a 25-6 hole. 

The Vikings would keep up the pressure for the remainder of the first half as they went into the locker room with a 43-24 lead, while allowing the Griffons just nine field goals. 

Megan Doyle led all players with 10 points in the first half, while Dani Arens had nine points on 4-8 shooting, while adding four rebounds and two blocks. 

Whitney Hofer had eight points and five rebounds in the half, as the Vikings leading scorer, Amy Puthoff went into halftime with seven points. 

As a team, the Vikings shot 46 percent from the field going 15 for 33 in the first half. On the defensive side of the ball in the first half, Augustana gave up just nine field goals as the Griffons shot 27 percent on 9 of 34 shooting. 

In the second half it was much of the same as the Vikings kept firing, and got up by as many as 34 points in the game. The Vikings shot 43 percent on the night on 31 of 72 shooting. 

Defensively they held the Griffons to just 32 percent shooting on the night , as they made 14 second half baskets to go 23 for 71 in the game. 

Four out of five starters were able to score in double figures for the Vikings as Hofer led all players with 21 points in the game, while adding eight rebounds. It is the second time this season Hofer has scored 21 points, which matches her season high. 

Arens recorded her second double-double of the season putting in a season-high 17 points, while grabbing 11 rebounds. Puthoff ended the night with 15 points and six rebounds, while Doyle scored 10 points and dished out five assists. 

Jessica Koch and Tierra Ford both scored 10 points to lead all Griffon players in a losing effort.

The Vikings will move on to play Division-III Wisconsin-Stout Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Elmen Center before a break in action until January 2 when they take on the Bemidji State Beavers.
