The Augustana men's basketball team did not have a good introduction to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as they were upset in their first conference game 68-56 by the University of Mary Marauders in Bismark, N.D. Friday evening.
The loss drops the Vikings to 4-2 and 0-1 in NSIC play. The loss also snaps their four game win streak and moves the Vikings to 0-2 on the road this season, while the Marauders take home their second win in a row, and second game of the season while improving to 2-4.
The Marauders were 9-10 from the free throw line in the last three minutes to seal the victory. Geoff West was 7-10 from the free throw line for the Marauders as the Vikings could not stop the bleeding down the stretch.
In the first half, Augustana shot just 38.5 percent from the field as they were lead by Eric Krogman who had 14 points and eight rebounds in the game. David Foster also had 14 points in the game while adding five rebounds and two steals.
In the second half, shooting did not improve for the Vikings as they were just 5-22 from the field, good for 22.7 percent from the field.
Augustana shot 31.3 percent (15-for-48) from the field for the game and 63.9 percent (23-for-36) from the free throw line. As they tried to catch up with the Marauders, the Vikings fired up eight three pointers in the second half and had nothing to show for it in the end as they went 0-for-8.
West led all scorers in the contest with 22 points on the night, while the rest of the Marauders shots 44.4 percent from the field on the night
Augustana will turn around and play on the road tomorrow night against the Northern State Wolves, who are 7-0 and 1-0 in NSIC play this season at 8 p.m. in Aberdeen, S.D.
