Augustana Volleyball Opens Season With 2 Wins

Augustana's volleyball team opened the 2008 season with a pair of victories at the Texas MedClinic Invitational Friday in San Antonio, Texas. The Vikings swept Eastern New Mexico by scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-15 before defeating Missouri Southern State in four games by scores of 19-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-17.

With first-year head coach Ashley Buckley at the helm, the Vikings used a balanced attack to defeat Eastern New Mexico. Kati Newgard led the team with 9 kills. Meanwhile, Beth Talcott and Blythe Johnson had 8 kills apiece, while Cayla Schroeder and Ellen Andrews chipped in with 7 kills each.

Augustana also featured a strong defense, holding ENMU to a .052 attack percentage (24 kills and 19 attack errors).  Lisa Hoegh recorded a double-double for Augie, collecting 35 assits and 10 digs. Andrews also had 4 blocks and Newgard added 3 blocks.

Against Missouri Southern State, Augustana dropped the first set before rallying to sweep the next 3 sets. Again, the Vikings used a balanced offensive attack as four players reached double figures in kills. Andrews led the way with 17 kills and 4 blocks, while Talcott had 15 kills. Schroeder added 13 kills to go along with a team-high 16 digs, while Newgard chipped in with 10 kills and 5 blocks.

Hoegh again had a double-double with 50 assists and 13 digs. Regan Tekavec contributed 12 digs.

Augustana hit .329 (64 kills, 15 errors, 149 attacks) for the match, but the Vikings cranked up their attack as the match progressed. In sets 3 and 4, Augie committed just 6 attack errors.

The Vikings conclude the weekend with a pair of matches on Saturday when they face Rollins (Fla.) and host St. Mary's.
