The eighth-ranked Augustana volleyball team lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season, dropping a 5-set match to Alaska-Anchorage (25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-13) before being swept by No. 13 Southwest Minnesota State (25-19, 25-23, 25-19) at the Concordia University Radisson-Roseville Tournament Friday in St. Paul, Minn.

Augustana (7-3) went tooth and nail with Alaska-Anchorage as the two teams exchanged the momentum. The Sea Wolves took the first and third games, while the Vikings captured the second and fourth games, forcing the decisive fifth game.

The Vikings gained the upper hand in the final game, taking leads of 11-6 and 12-7. However, Alaska-Anchorage reeled off 5 straight points to knot the score at 12-12.

Kati Newgard pounded a kill to give Augustana a 13-12 lead, but UAA used kills by Calli Scott and Rhea Cardwell to reach match point at 14-13. Stacie Meisner then served an ace to end the match.

The two teams were practically even in the final statistics. Alaska-Anchorage had 66 kills to Augie's 64, while Vikings had 84 digs compared to 79 for UAA.

Cayla Schroeder led Augustana with 19 kills and a .348 attack percentage. Newgard chipped in with 11 kills, while Jenna Hultgren came off the bench to add 10 kills and a .455 attack percentage.

Regan Tekavec led 4 Vikings in double digits in digs with 21, while Schroeder added 15. Lisa Hoegh tossed in 16 digs to go along with 54 assists, while Brianna Erickson contributed 12 digs.

Against Southwest Minnesota State, the Vikings couldn't get going offensively as they had a .155 attack percentage for the match (35 kills, 17 errors, 116 attacks). SMSU, meanwhile, hit . 250.

Schroeder led Augie with 9 kills. Newgard added 6, as did freshman Alex Burke, who made her collegiate debut in the match. Schroeder recorded a team-high 14 digs, while Tekavec added 12. Hoegh dished out 29 assists.

The Vikings will try to start a new winning streak on Saturday with a pair of matches. Augustana opens the day by facing No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul, the defending Division II national champions, at 1 p.m., followed by a match against Central Washington at 5 p.m.
