Behind the strength of some nearly flawless hitting, the Augustana volleyball team swept the University of Mary by scores of 25-13, 25-16, 25-23 Friday night in Bismarck, N.D.
The 20th-ranked Vikings improved to 9-5 on the season and 2-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, while the host Marauders dropped to 2-12 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC.
For just the second time this season, Augustana hit above 30 percent, as the Vikings recorded a .306 team attack percentage. The Vikings had 49 kills and just 16 errors on 108 attacks.
Leading the way was senior Cayla Schroeder, who had 10 kills and 0 errors on 14 attacks for a .714 attack percentage. Freshman Alex Burke wasn't far off with a .667 attack percentage as she collected 6 kills and no errors on 9 attacks.
Augustana dominated the first two sets. The Vikings pounded 33 kills in those sets with just 7 attack errors in cruising to a 2-0 lead. However, in the third set, the Vikings had 9 errors, allowing U-Mary to stay in the set. But with the score tied 22-22, the Vikings scored 3 of the next 4 points to close out the match. Rebecca Hindman registered all 3 of her kills during that stretch to help seal the win.
Kati Newgard led the Vikings with 12 kills, joining Schroeder in double figures. Schroeder posted a double-double by collecting a match-high 17 digs. Jenna Hultgren was the only other Viking in double figures with 13. Setter Lisa Hoegh passed out 36 set assists to go along with 5 service aces.
Augustana concludes its weekend road trip on Saturday with a stop in Aberdeen, S.D., to take on Northern State in a 4 p.m. contest.
